Thomas Bernthaler

Managing Director & Co-founder

Thomas Bernthaler advises international companies on entering Malaysia, building effective local partnerships and developing their wider ASEAN strategy. As Managing Director and Co-founder of TAPiO Management Advisory, he combines more than three decades of international business experience with practical knowledge of Malaysia, where he has been based since 2008.

Areas of expertise

  • Market Entry & ASEAN Strategy
  • Partner & Distributor Development
  • Acquisition & JV Origination
  • Investment Facilitation
  • Business & Technology Assessment
  • Implementation & In-Market Problem Solving

His work starts with understanding the client’s business: its commercial objectives, technology, customers and operating requirements. He helps management teams assess opportunities, challenge assumptions and decide how to proceed. His assignments span market entry, partner and distributor development, acquisition and joint-venture opportunities, investment facilitation and the coordination of local implementation.

Thomas has built and operated businesses in Europe, the United States and Asia, and has invested in and advised growing companies. His technology background adds a distinctive analytical discipline. In the United States, he worked with corporate and public-sector organisations to improve business processes and solve complex operational problems through enterprise software, supported by an international development team of more than 150 developers. That work required a detailed understanding of how organisations function, not simply how to build technology.

He applies the same discipline to international expansion: identifying the underlying challenge, testing alternatives and turning a commercial objective into a workable plan. For clients, this means looking beyond whether an opportunity appears attractive to whether the partners, capabilities and operating arrangements can support it. When a project stalls, his focus is on understanding the cause and organising the work needed to move it forward.

His engagement with Malaysia began through US-Malaysia trade initiatives in the early 2000s. He later led TAPiO’s Flanders Investment & Trade Malaysia Antenna mandate from 2019 to 2024, supporting companies with market intelligence, partner identification and business development. His experience connects the expectations of international management teams with Malaysian business practices, institutions and the practical requirements of establishing a local presence.

Thomas helps companies assess Malaysia as a hub for wider ASEAN expansion while recognising the different commercial conditions and partner requirements across the region. He places particular importance on candid advice, direct involvement and following decisions through into action. His commitment is to helping clients build commercially sound businesses and partnerships that create lasting value for them, their local partners and Malaysia.
